Learning the back end of filmmaking
Inner thoughts was a project that I had since my second year of university, it was a 5.1 surround soundscape that was based on past traumas and emotions that I kept hidden. I think there is an issue I find sharing with people my feelings and also just finding the right way to being able to express thoughts, this sounds scape explores the extreme end of it where it goes beyond saving and it is something that consumes till a point of no return.
With that project done, I thought to maybe one day bring it to life through an exhibition given the feedback from my peers, but then it came to the idea of just making it a short film to create. Thinking of this idea and slowly taking the time to learn and develop this idea and bring it to life took is a journey itself, hope you can stick around for the ride.
Learning from my past
I knew that some skills I had to bring forward from university were people skills, learning how to work with different people and to be able to communicate with them in the right way that is clear and professional. I also had to be neat and on the ball when it comes to tracking our work and be accountable for anything that is happening, these skills are what is important in any work I do and those are the pillars that I will in mind.
Some other skills that I had to pick up are how to create a way to research this project, learn how to create material to market the film and also look at festivals and ways to distribute this film. Directing was also something new to me in being able to plan and conceptualise ideas to create when I wanted make this into a film. I wanted to create a film that has live action and animation, there is a difference in approach to each medium of work and learning that is a skill that I had to have some form of knowledge to be able to assist the team. With a lot to learn, the best way to go forward is to just do it.
Funding the film
Film funding is not only about getting money to make the film, it is also about the cost of sending it to film festivals. I tend to take them as little competitions you pay to enter, and if you get selected you made it to the next stage to potentially win a prize. It is also a great way to have your film screened at an event and if you can go there you can meet more people to work with.
With that, I chose the platform, Kickstarter, to raise funds. It seemed like a good platform where I can also create rewards for those who choose to back our project (learning from my past experience working on films observing the team), and it would be great to make them feel engaged and wanting to be part of helping this project.
With the back end planned, now it is time to put it all in motions slowly but surely as we move on to pre production and development. Kickstarter Link : https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/winstontjia/inner-thoughts
